🎤 About Us
Hey there! I’m Nathan —Mariah’s partner (@pick.up.your.knitter) and her Full-time Ball Winder.
Her passion for the craft is charismatic and infectious, and I support it any way that I can —so, when her focus turned to using her considerable scrap yarn collection for freestyle design, I was pumped.
It made perfect sense to me:
1) She already owned it, so why not? and,
2) Scrap yarn has so much POTENTIAL. It can be anything, for anyone.
Plus, creating something unique without a pattern is especially meaningful…and hard, as we found out. Like really hard. 😫
Without a formal design background, her desire to design was stronger than her knowledge. Second guessing color and construction decisions stilled her hands, and her motivation to be creative would come and go. I saw how this mental tension leached away the mind soothing benefits of knitting until the scrap yarn collection got ignored in favor of the next cool pattern.
Scrappy Designs is our response to this cycle. We want to balance the comforts of structure with the exciting challenge of spontaneity ⭐
With a color theory course 🎨 and video interviews 🎥 with designers, we’ve collected nuggets of design wisdom to share. This is the structure —we want to nudge creators to plan their scrappy garments in advance. This approach means less second guessing and more opportunity for creative flow.
Spontaneity is found in the community side of Scrappy Designs:
💬 We have a forum for design feedback and,
📅 Weekly events with an intergenerational group of creators.
The agenda here is to swap ideas, share inspirations, and hold each other accountable to our scrappy garments.
Scrappy Design is still a WIP, so we will be leaning on you a little bit to develop it. But, we held ourselves to these ideas: everything is self-paced, fibre focused, and meant to spark joy while improving your design skills.
Let’s give that scrap yarn the love it deserves and have fun at while doing it 🎉
Nathan & Mariah.
